Software I use and recommend

Back

Media Players

mpv

A very lightweight media player with support for most video and audio codecs. Primarily operated from the command line. It has integration with youtube-dl (or yt-dlp) so you can stream youtube videos from your terminal, which is pretty slick.

Web Browsers

Firefox

Yep. Good ole Furryfox. Not really the greatest browser but it gets the job done. The default configuration is garbage and you have to spend a bit of time getting it set up properly but its not that difficult. I have ublock origin and the arkenfox user js installed.

Desktop environment

KDE

The most bloated desktop environment ever but it still works well, and its infinitely better than GNOME. The file picker also has thumbnails. (Sorry for the anime AIDS) That's it. That's the main reason why I switched. I haven't used dwm since December of 2023.

Linux Distributions

Arch Linux

I HEKKIN LOVE SYSTEMD!!!!!

After 2 long years of feeling proud of myself for not using a distro with systemd I just decided to switch, and I haven't looked back. That was 2 years ago now. I'm still using Arch and its great.

Downloaders and scrapers

Aria2

A command line downloader. The main reason to use it is because it can resume a download if its been interrupted.

Jdownloader2

A download manager which can automatically parse web pages for download links, bypass captchas, and extract compressed archives.

qBittorrent

Its just a bittorrent client. It works great and it doesn't have ads.

yt-dlp

It's just youtube-dl but better. You can download videos from Youtube and a plethora of other sites in a variety of different formats. It just werks and it werks well.

nicotine+

Nicotine+ is a free/open source Soulseek client. Soulseek works pretty much and same as napster/limewire. It even came out around the same time. Somehow or other it's managed to outlive both of its competitors. (Probably because its central server is hosted in Israel (our greatest ally).) Soulseek is a really good service and it has just about any song/album you can think of.

Miscellaneous

Chocolatey

A package manager for windows. Useful for installing basic software after reinstalling Windows for the 53rd time.

F-droid

An app store for free and open source Android applications.

ffmpeg

General purpose command line tool for video and audio recording, and conversion.

KOReader

An ebook reader that's designed to work on devices with e-ink displays. It's also available on Android. It supports most common ebook formats, it can search through the text, reformat the pages to fit your screen, and it can load large documents, which is the primary reason why I use it. I use it on my phone and on a hacked Kindle Paperwhite.

Calibre

Very similar to KOReader but for desktop systems. Again, the main reason why I use it is because it can load large documents without issue.

rsync

Rsync can transfer and sync files locally or over ssh. It can also preserve file permissions and metadata, as well as preserve partially uploaded/downloaded files if the transfer in interrupted.

Host file

Not technically software but still useful. Used to block unwanted sites from connecting to your computer, which is a very effective method for blocking ads. This Github repository has a number of host files with different combinations of unfavorable sites included in them.

emailwiz

A useful script to automate the process of setting up an email server.

Adding some new stuff and changing the wording so it doesn't read like English is my second language.
